HIMSS Foundation Sponsored 2026-2027 Scholarship 

Purpose


The HIMSS Foundation awards scholarships to HIMSS student members who have achieved academic excellence and demonstrate the potential to be future leaders in the health information and technology industry. 

For the 2026-2027 academic year, the HIMSS Foundation will be awarding two (2) scholarships. 

  • One (1) HIMSS Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship
  • One (1) HIMSS Foundation Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility


To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be a student member of HIMSS.
  • The primary occupation of the applicant at the time the scholarship is awarded must be that of student in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program (dependent on scholarship selected) related to the health information or management systems field. The specific degree program is not a critical factor, although it is expected that programs similar to those in industrial engineering, operations research, bioinformatics, health informatics, computer science and information systems, mathematics, and quantitative programs in business administration, clinical disciplines, and health administration will predominate.
  • Undergraduate scholarship applicants must be at least a first-term junior when the scholarship is awarded.
  • Be at least 21 years of age by April 5, 2027.
  • Be able to attend no less than two (2) days of the 2027 HIMSS Global Health Conference and Exhibition in Chicago, IL, April 5-8, 2027.

Applicants cannot be employed by HIMSS, engaged in a consulting contract with any component of HIMSS, or be currently serving on a HIMSS Board of Directors or HIMSS Advisory Board.

* Previous scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply again.

Program Benefits


  • Symbol of recognition.
  • Public announcement in an official HIMSS publication and on relevant website(s).
  • Paid registration to HIMSS27 taking place April 5-8, 2027, in Chicago, IL.
  • Roundtrip airfare to HIMSS27 (coach airfare, maximum $650).
  • Two (2) nights lodging (maximum, $275 per night).
  • Up to $200 travel/other expenses reimbursement.
  • $5,000 scholarship to recipient.

Application Process


Scholarship applicants must complete all requirements of the online application by 12:00 pm CT, Monday, November 16, 2026. This includes:

  • Completion of a basic questionnaire.
  • Listings of the following:
    • any professional or academic societies or associations to which you belong.
    • any conferences, seminars, or symposiums you have attended that were related to healthcare information and management systems. Please specify program title, topic and if you were a presenter or attendee.
    • any personal achievements or extracurricular involvement in organizations outside of professional/academic organizations, etc.
    • any involvement you have had with HIMSS (attended HIMSS Global Health Conference, participated as a program assistant, served on local chapter board, etc.).
  • Responses to the following questions (300-word count maximum for each response):
    • Describe how you believe the use of information and technology in healthcare can improve the quality of care delivered in the United States and around the world.
    • Describe how you believe the HIMSS Foundation scholarship funds can assist you in gaining an educational experience that will promote the use of health information and technology in the future.
  • Submission of one letter of recommendation (must be dated within the last 3 years and can be provided by professor, supervisor, classmate, etc.).
    • This must be submitted during the application submission.
  • Optional submission of a resume/CV (a copy of a LinkedIn profile will be accepted if it has relevant information, including dates, positions held, etc.).
